Merzouga is where the road meets the Erg Chebbi dunes

Merzouga is one of Morocco’s best-known Sahara destinations because it sits beside the Erg Chebbi dune system. The experience is not limited to one camel ride: sunrise, sunset, overnight camps, jeep safaris and longer desert explorations all use the dunes and surrounding desert landscapes in different ways.

Planning Merzouga well starts with a simple question: are you already staying in the area, or are you traveling from Marrakech? Short camel and jeep products make sense once you are in Merzouga, while reaching Merzouga from Marrakech usually belongs to a multi-day route.

Understanding Erg Chebbi

Erg Chebbi is the dune environment associated with Merzouga. This distinction matters because not every Moroccan “desert” experience looks the same. Agafay near Marrakech is rocky; Merzouga offers the large golden sand-dune landscape travelers often picture when they imagine the Sahara.

The dunes also change with light. Sunrise and sunset are popular not because the landscape disappears during the day, but because low-angle light creates stronger shadows, texture and color across the sand.

Short camel rides: sunrise or sunset

The current Camel Ride in Merzouga collection includes separate sunrise and sunset experiences. Both currently start from €25, allowing travelers already staying around Merzouga to experience Erg Chebbi without committing to an overnight camp.

What changes when you stay overnight?

An overnight stay turns the dunes from a short excursion into the environment of the evening and morning. Instead of riding out for one light window, you experience the transition after sunset, the night sky and the early hours around camp.

Camp standards can vary by booking option, so read the actual product features rather than assuming every “desert camp” includes the same tent, bathroom, meal or private-service setup.

Jeep safaris and dune adventures

Camel riding is not the only way to experience the area. The current Jeep Safari in Merzouga and Jeep Dune Bashing collections offer motorized exploration. These products can add rocky terrain, off-road routes, nomad-area visits and dune-oriented driving depending on the exact itinerary.

A half-day dune-bashing product currently starts from €35, while a full-day option starts from €50. These activities suit travelers who want more movement than a camel ride.

Merzouga from Marrakech

Merzouga should not be treated as a quick excursion from Marrakech. The current site offers 3-day, 4-day and 5-day routes because the distance is part of a larger journey through the High Atlas and southern Morocco.

The 3-day route includes the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades/Todra region and a camel experience at Erg Chebbi. Longer routes add more time and additional southern landscapes.

Do not plan Merzouga only around the camel ride.

The route, camp, changing light, desert silence and surrounding communities are all part of the experience. A single activity is only one layer of the destination.

What to pack for Merzouga

  • Light clothing for warm daytime conditions and extra layers for cooler evenings.
  • Closed or secure footwear for walking on sand and around camp.
  • Sun protection, sunglasses and water.
  • A small overnight bag if your main luggage can remain elsewhere.
  • Battery or power bank for sunrise, sunset and camp photography.
  • A scarf or light face covering can be useful when wind moves sand.
